Here are a few short mini reviews of some of the wines we’ve tasted this week.
2010 Apaltugua Reserve Maule Valley Chile Malbec
Excellent Malbec from Chile does happen as often as it does in Argentina—well at least ones that are imported into the states. This is a good wine with solid Malbec characteristics but not much polish. With so many out there that really shine, this one has some stiff competition that relegates this wine to middle of the pack. If it is on sale for a big discount or it is one of the few choices you have available, take it otherwise keep looking. Rating: B | $12 | 13.5% ABV
2009 Liberty School California Cabernet Sauvignon
Straightforward, smooth and simple Cabernet with cherry vanilla coke flavors. Rating: C- | $14 | 13.5% ABV
2010 D&L Carinalli Vineyards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
A simple, clean and delicate wine showing mainly strawberry aromas and flavors. Soft in the mouth and easy to drink. Rating: B+ | $25 | 14.1% ABV
2008 J-P Honrama Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine has a fine pedigree of grapes grown in a very desirous location. The aromas are ripe dark berry with wet leather and fresh tobacco. On the palate the flavors are ripe fruit from a dusty country road. The finish is long and lingering. Rating: B | $48 | 13.9% ABV
