¡Salud! Benefit Auction: Make a Stand for a Good Cause
One of the most long-lived and successful fundraisers in the industry, ¡Salud! celebrates its 21st birthday with a preview of the 2011 vintage Pinot Noirs as well as a silent and live auction dinner gala to benefit seasonal vineyard workers and their families. No event exemplifies the Oregon wine community’s renowned camaraderie in the same way as ¡Salud! The Oregon Pinot Noir Auction. On November 9 and 10, winemakers and principals will once again gather to show their support for the seasonal vineyard workers without whom Oregon’s finest wines would not be possible.
The program is supported by the Oregon wine community and Tuality Healthcare to provide access to healthcare services for Oregon’s seasonal vineyard workers and their families. The key fundraiser is the annual November auction at which Oregon’s premier winemakers debut one-of-a-kind Pinot Noirs crafted exclusively for ¡Salud! These cuvées are highly prized by collectors and available only through the auction.
This video will help you understand fully how this organization benefits the community:
“To our understanding, no other agricultural industry in the country supports its seasonal workers at this level,” says event co-chair Will Neuhauser. “Despite the best intentions in the world, wineries can’t supply health care and other benefits to this vital workforce because they are only with individual vineyards for a short period of time, often just days or weeks. This is an impactful way to give back to the people who work hard to bring in the grapes to make outstanding wine.”
“It’s simply the right thing to do,” agreed co-chair Donna Morris of Winderlea Vineyard & Winery. “These workers move from crop to crop with no healthcare support. ¡Salud! alleviates many costly ER visits because we can address health concerns before they become acute.”
In 2011, over 3,600 workers and family members were registered in the program, 917 of whom attended a clinic at a vineyard or their worksite. Over 7,000 medical and dental encounters were documented including:
- 3,400 dental procedures
- 658 influenza and tetanus vaccinations
- 237 vision exams and glasses
- 200 x-ray and lab diagnostics
- 106 major medial including Emergency, surgery and hospitalization
The total program ¡Salud! Benefit Auction expense for fiscal year 2011 was $695,000, averaging $98 per encounter. Largely in part of effective collaborative relationships with partnering healthcare organizations, ¡Salud! is able to deliver $3 of service for every $1 spent, making the organization highly cost effective.
