Wine Bytes of the Week

Here are a few short mini reviews of some of the wines we’ve tasted this week.

2002 Vinicola de Tomelloso La Mancha Torre de Gazate Red Blend

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo comes from what was a so-so vintage for a lot of Spain. It represents old style winemaking in the old world. Well structured and even after a decade after bottling the fruit is still tight and tannic. Allow a couple of hours to breath or use a Soiree. Serve with complex hearty dishes. Rating: Good (84) | $ | 13.5% ABV | Find this wine to buy: Vinquire |

2010 D&L Carinalli Vineyards Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

This Russian River offering from D&L Carinalli is a simple, clean and delicate wine showing mainly strawberry aromas and flavors. Soft in the mouth and easy to drink it will be a crowd pleaser. The best food pairings will not include cuisine that is too bold and too complex. Rating: Very Good (87) | $25 | 14.1% ABV | Find this wine to buy: Vinquire |

2011 Rallison Horesleap Vineyard Pinot Gris

The 2011 Pinot Gris displays tropical fruit and apricot on the nose. The palate is bright and zesty supported by slight touch of pineapple followed by pear and peach notes. An excellent match with fruit, fish, chicken and spicy dishes. Rating: Good (86) | $19 | 12.5% ABV Find this wine to buy: Vinquire |

2010 Domaine du Tariquet Cotes des Gascogne France Sauvignon Blanc

Pretty solid old world Sauvignon blanc. Mineral aromas and flavors add some complexity to the citrus apple core that defines this varietal. Shellfish, fresh caught ling cod or calamari will work. Rating: Good (85) | $10 | 12.5% ABV Find this wine to buy: Vinquire |

2011 Arnaldo Caprai Grechetto Colli Martani Grecante

Fruity nose, pineapple and pear flavors with lemon-lime, celery, and citrus. Medium bodied and zangy. Could use a little acid in the mid-palette as it falls a little flabby in the middle. Rating: Good (87) | $20 | 13.5% ABV Find this wine to buy: Vinquire |
