Master SOMM Showing in Denver
An Evening with the Masters: great food, great wine, and a great movie….what could be better! The public is invited to attend a special film showing of SOMM, a fascinating look inside the world of wine and those who study it. The film takes viewers on a rare humorous, emotional and illuminating look into a mysterious world – the Court of Master Sommeliers and the massively intimidating Master Sommelier exam. The showing takes place on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at 7:15 p.m. at the Marriot SpringHill Suites hotel on Auraria (1190 Auraria Parkway, Denver, CO 80204). Tickets to the film and reception are $100 each, with a total limit of 200 tickets.
A reception from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. will feature 13 wine and food pairing stations. Each station will feature a Colorado Master Sommeliers’ favorite selection of wine and what they love to pair with it. The food will be prepared by Five, a chef driven culinary group whose purpose is to help put Colorado cuisine on the national culinary map. As a team, they bring attention to a thriving Colorado culinary environment that has built its reputation on hard work, dedication, creativity, and teamwork. While preparing their tasty tidbits, they will be joined by MSU Denver students who will work side by side with them. A small silent auction of all things wine will be a part of the reception.
Other events occurring in the Hospitality Learning Center that evening are….
Two private wine pairing dinners are offered from 5:00 p.m. – 7 p.m. Executive Chef Kevin Taylor, Restaurant Kevin Taylor, and Jay Fletcher, MS, Southern Wine and Spirits, will prepare a four-course dinner featuring perfectly matched wine pairings (50 max) AND Executive Chef Jim Butchart, Aspen Skiing Co., and Sabato Sagaria, MS, Director of Food & Beverage at The Little Nell at Aspen, will prepare a four-course dinner featuring perfectly matched wine pairings (40 max). The film showing of SOMM, will be at 7:15 p.m. in the hotel ballroom, capacity 200. SOMM is a fascinating look inside the world of wine and those who study it. The film takes viewers on a rare humorous, emotional and illuminating look into a mysterious world – the Court of Master Sommeliers and the massively intimidating Master Sommelier exam. The film is directed by Jason Wise, whose family is from Colorado. We believe his wife attended MSU Denver. The film is the #1 downloaded docu film on iTunes, and is receiving rave reviews.
Many of Colorado’s Masters will be attending the event, as well as celebrities from the film. The Examination Director, Shayn Bjornholm, Court of Master Sommeliers, will be attending and moderating the Q&A following the film. Thanks to Shayn, our Hospitality Learning Center will be a future site for exams and workshops. We’re on the map! The Masters attending the event have been invited to guest lecture on Monday, September 16th.
Proceeds benefit the Hospitality Learning Center and the Hospitality, Tourism, and Events Program at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
