The Outer Limits label from the Zapallar Vineyard Aconcagua Valley in Chile is a new project from Aurielo Montes who has been one of my favorite wine producers for quite some time now. That being said, this Pinot Noir is one of the best South American offerings of that varietal I have tasted to date.
There is a wild and wooly characteristic to the tasting profile that may not be everyone’s cup of tea, or wine to be more exact. Aromas of ripe cherry and a hint of fresh sage greet you as the bouquet begins to develop. The red fruit component continues adding notes of lingonberry and a sinewy earthiness to the mix. On the palate, the wine has a texture unlike any other Pinot noir. The medium long finish is pleasurable and focused showcasing some minerality. If you have grown weary of the finesse of Willamette Valley or the bold bluntness of Pinot noir from Russian River Valley you will want to taste this wine.
