Wine Review: 2010 Carlin de Paolo Barbera D’Asti Superiore, Piedmont, Italy
What a pleasure to have the opportunity to taste this wine. The 2010 vintage is in its prime window of drinkability and should continue through 2017.
A juicy, rich, vibrant wine without the typical cedar, woody and astringently dry characteristics usually common in Barbera wines from Asti. The dark cherry-berry aromas mingle with crush dried mint to create alluring olfactory nuances.
Combine those aromas with a smooth and balanced blackberry cherry assault on your palate and a long lightly smoky finish. I’d say what we have here is an ability to communicate. The message I got was the winemaker intended us to experience a complete and desirous package that expresses the terroir of Asti.
I would highly recommend pairing this wine with a dish of baked crispy lamb ribs served with Barbera wine sauce which, by the way, if you are in Asti, is served at Restaurant Il Cavolo a Merenda.
