A world class Merlot: Northstar #MerlotMe

2011 Northstar Merlot, Columbia Valley, Washington

2012 was the first time I had the opportunity to taste some Northstar Merlot. That chance came with an invitation to try the newly opened Ringside Fish house and meet the winemaker from Northstar Winery Dave “Merf” Merfeld who has been with the winery since 2001.

The winery started as a project of Stimson Lane, parent company to Chateau St. Michelle and Columbia Crest Winery.  The original concept was to make high end world class Merlot from the best fruit available in the Columbia Valley.

Fast forward to 2015 and Northstar has released their 2011 Columbia Valley Merlot and the original concept is still going strong. This is a world class high-end Merlot that is dark and inky in color with aromas that create an evocative allure.  The plum, currant and violet aromatics give way to soft and inviting textures on the palate. A persistent core of earthy black cherry, licorice and mocha flavors kick off the flavor party.

If I was invited to that party I would want to bring some oak smoked pizza oven roasted chicken because it would pair nicely with this Merlot.

Rating: Excellent (90) | $41 | 14.7 % ABV
