2014 Clearwater Canyon Cellars Syrah, Umiker Vineyards, Lewis-Clark Valley Estate, Idaho

Karl and Coco Umiker of Clearwater Canyon have made a style of Syrah that is a vast departure from the Old-world Languedoc or Rhone style wines. The nose expresses subtle baking spice, blueberries, and some grilled meat and fresh rosemary hovering in the background. For flavors, it is full-bodied, rustic and round, with layers of black and red fruits with a distinctive punch of plum, sage and lavender that comes through the midpalate, riding like a surfer on a 30-foot wave to the finish.

The foundation is intriguing with some interesting, earthy undertones that balance beautifully between tannins and acidity. Subtle vanilla nuances also shine through from the oak aging regimen which is aged 17 months in 30% new American Oak. Grilled leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic will pair well with this elixir. 187 case production. Buy!
