Seeking Closure: Screw Caps vs. Corks Technical Tasting

Wine Tastings, Wine Technology 23 Comments » .by Pamela Heiligenthal

I’m reminded every day that the appreciation and enjoyment of wine is a very personal experience. What you like may not be the cat’s meow for someone else. This was evident at the ‘10 Oregon Wine Industry Symposium (OWIS), “Technical Tasting: Seeking Closure & Hi-Tech Winemaking“.

Most of the attendees were winemakers, viticulturists and industry folks in the know when it comes to high-tech stuff like RO, ultra-filtration or VA (don’t worry, we’ll get to these wine geek terms in a later post) but what blew me away at this event were all the differences in opinions between the wines we tasted.

There were a few hundred industry folks locked in a room (well, not literally) for a couple of hours to taste and discuss closures and Hi-Tech Winemaking. Harry Peterson-Nedry from Chehalem Winery moderated the session with panelists Domingo Rodriguez (Winesecrets), Clark Smith (Vinovation) and David Paige (Adelsheim Vineyard).

We kicked off the technical tasting with a comparison between cork and screw cap closures, blind tasting two white wines – identical in every way except one was bottled using cork, and the other under screw cap.  So what’s the verdict? Read the rest of this entry »

We Are Bloggers, Hear Us Bark!

Wine 13 Comments » .by Pamela Heiligenthal

Have you ever had one of those jobs where your manager [consistently] reminded you of how badly you suck at self-promotion?

Yeah, been there, done that, and if you’re like me, you have a hard time with self-adulation. Maybe that’s why folks like us should hire marketing folks to handle this stuff, because seriously, we sometimes suck at accepting compliments and tooting our own horn.

But the heart of this post (and the point I am trying to make) is how bloggers are really starting to come into their own. We all know about the big dogs, but the little Chihuahuas are starting to show their feisty side, moving swiftly through the fierce competition.  No more riding inside pockets, purses or tote bags, and no more damn tacos! (RIP little Gidget!) Oh, wait, I like tacos.

Seriously though, this really comes at no surprise as reports such as Vintank’s We are Here!, The state of Wine Industry Social Media (‘09) delves into the functions, implications and philosophies that drive consumers into Social Networking  sites on the internet.

According to the report, “The wine blogosphere in aggregate Read the rest of this entry »

Ancient Peaks Winery-Good and Green

Green Wine, Vineyards 1 Comment » .by Mark Storer

Ancient Peaks Winery is riding high. Not only does it sit a bit higher in elevation, but the recent certification of its Margarita vineyard as Sustainable in Practice, or SIP, is another feather in an already festooned cap.

This is a storied vineyard in a storied place. Franciscan missionaries founded rancho Santa Margaraita, at the foot of the Santa Lucia Mountains and the top of the Cuesta Grade between San Luis Obispo and Atascadero, CA in 1774. The vineyard itself was planted by Tim Mondavi in the 1990’s and was purchased by Doug Filipponi and his partner Karl Wittstrom in 2005. Read the rest of this entry »

Twitter Lingo for Wine Geeks (Part II: #Hashtags)

Wine, Wine Business 25 Comments » .by Pamela Heiligenthal

If you managed to survive our last post on how to find and follow wine twitters,  your’re ready to dive into our next topic, #hashtags, so lets get down to business.

Today we’ll dig into using #hashtags efficiently so that you get the most out of what they have to offer.

THE BASICS

In simple terms, think of a hashtag as a means to create “groupings” on Twitter to organize your comments so that others can find them later. In other words, let’s say you have a file cabinet at your office and you want to name a folder “Zinfandel” and file it under “Z”. Simple enough, right? Read the rest of this entry »

Twitter Lingo for Wine Geeks (Part I: Finding & Following)

Wine, Wine Business 41 Comments » .by Pamela Heiligenthal

So I hear you’ve recently set up a new Twitter account but you’re lost at what to do with it now, eh? Well let me tell you dear reader friend, you are not alone.

As I’ve written in a previous post, social media is transforming our media landscape and for some, it’s not so easy to grasp this newfound concept. If you’re like most of my readers, you’re probably asking questions like,  “How do I…” or “What does “RT” mean“, and “How do I find winos?“, or what the heck is a “#wine“? …and for my wine biz friends, you want to know “What’s the value“, and “What’s the ROI“?

Unfamiliar territory would bring anyone to the brink of bonkers and believe me I understand your pain — but in all honesty, it’s not so bad after you understand some of the basics.

Some of you in the wine industry biz probably want to Read the rest of this entry »
